On Tuesday, April 8, under the lights at Marco Battaglia Field at Rutgers University, the highly ranked Westfield Blue Devils showed why they’re one of the top teams in the state, taking down the Montclair Mounties 13-5.
The Mounties came ready to compete on the big stage, hanging tough against Westfield’s explosive offense. Trinity-bound senior Billy Gerne made his presence felt with 4 goals, while sophomore attackman Koby Waldman added 3 as the Blue Devils started to pull away.
The Mounties were held scoreless in the first quarter, thanks in part to several key saves from Westfield goalie Corey Gilford. But Montclair didn’t go away quietly. They found their footing in the second quarter and continued to push throughout the third, refusing to back down against the powerhouse Blue Devils.
While Westfield pulled away in the last quarter, Montclair showed fight and proved they could hang with the best. Montclair had a few bright spots and performances, including junior captain Jesse Charkow contributing on both sides of the ball, scoring two goals to keep the Mounties in the game. Playing under the lights at Rutgers was no easy test, but the Mounties showed flashes of what makes them such a dangerous and resilient team moving forward
