On Friday, The Montclair Mounties Boys Hockey Team produced a dominant performance against Fair Lawn High School, winning 5-0. Goal scorers included senior captain Sam Rotella, junior captain Logan Brown, junior Colin Felber, and freshman Jaxon Parma.
The Mounties controlled the first period offensively and defensively, maintaining possession of the puck and allowing Fair Lawn little opportunities at goal. Early on, Sam Rotella gave Montclair an early 1-0 lead, weaving through defenders and placing the puck into the far right corner. Moments after, junior Logan Brown extended Montclair’s lead to 2-0, striking the puck from a distance to find the back of the net, marking his 5th goal of the season. Defensively, a physical Montclair team limited Fair Lawn’s opportunities exceptionally well throughout the first period, giving the opponents minimal space to get shots on the Mounties' goal. In the closing moments of the first period, junior Colin Felber gave Montclair a 3-goal advantage, striking a powerful shot into the back of the net following great build-up play from the Mounties. Following Felber’s first goal of the season, both teams went to their locker rooms before the start of the second period.
The second period was more of the same from the Mounties', dominance on both sides of the ice. Montclair created multiple goal-scoring opportunities throughout the second period, causing the Fair Lawn defense to struggle. Freshmen Jaxon Parma would find the net to give Montclair a 4-goal advantage coming from an assist by Logan Brown. Brown got the team out of pressure from the Fair Lawn players and passed the puck to Parma, who placed the puck into the back of the net. Following Parma’s goal, senior goalkeeper Sam Korenbaum made a great save, preventing the opposing team from scoring and attaining momentum. After Korenbaum’s save, the second period concluded, and there was a long intermission so the ice could be cleaned.
The final period was once again a dominant display from the Mounties. Montclair showed fantastic offensive build-up play to create goal-scoring opportunities. Sam Rotella would find the net again early into the third period, extending Montclair’s lead to 5-0. Rotella drove into space and placed the puck into the net. His second goal of the game marked his 15th goal of the season! The Mounties would control the remaining minutes of the game, moving the puck around the ice between the players. Montclair created one final goal-scoring chance through sophomore Hannah Rosenheck, who showed great skill to breeze past the Fair Lawn defender and get a shot at goal. Unfortunately, her shot was saved by the goalkeeper. Rosenheck’s shot marked the final action of the third period and concluded the game. The Mounties recorded their 5th win of the season with their 5-0 win against Fair Lawn yesterday evening.
Montclair’s win puts them at a 5-1 record and marks their second win in a row. Yesterday’s game will serve as a confidence booster for the Boy’s Hockey Team before their match against Millburn coming up on December 27th, who they previously beat 7-3 earlier this season. The team is more than capable of achieving great things this season with the players and staff they have. The future is bright for the Montclair Boy’s Hockey team!
