The Mounties were coming off of a three-match winning streak when they met up with Oak Knoll last Thursday. Constance Brody and Terese Tucker, 3-0 and 2-0 respectively were solid Foil and Mya Spears in Saber, 2-1 but the Mounties were unable to overcome the Royals’ dominance in Epee and Saber. Oak Knoll defeated the Mounties 16-11.
Similar to the boys, the girls saber group (42-30) has been dominant throughout the season. The Santelli Tournament (Girls) is where the bar is met for the District Championships. The saber squad turned in a strong performance in the first session. They were led by sophomore Mya Spears, and seniors Daniela Pittman and Addison Goodspeed-Moses who did not lose a bout in that session and finished 6-0. The group secured a 6th pace finish for the tournament. Cecilia Martinez and Nile Brunson were both undefeated in the morning session, advanced to the final session and helped the Epee squad post a 4th place finish. The team finished 5th overall.
With team District Championships upcoming on February 4, 2024, the Mountie fencers will turn their attention to the final season match against Kent Place. Coach Shead indicated that he should receive seeding notification by Friday. The District Championships will be held at North Hunterdon High School.
