In the quarterfinals of North Jersey Section 1 Group IV tournament, the Montclair Mounties faced the Ridgewood Maroons on Tuesday, February 26.
Ridge wood started the game off hot, with a 22-10 lead to end the first quarter. Their combination of defending and attacking the glass was especially difficult for the Mounties to counter in the first.
Things were brighter for Montclair in the first half. They were able to keep themselves in the game, out scoring their opponents by 1 point, but still facing a 35-24 Ridgewood lead.
Ridgewood started the second half with the same intensity they did in the first, extending their lead to a commanding 53-36, heading into the 4th quarter.
The Mounties were not able to ever find an answer to Ridgewood extremely productive offense. As fourth quarter play ensued, the Maroons extended their already dominant lead further by capitalizing on fast breaks and scoring countless unanswered points. In the end, the Mounties lost 68-48.
Although the Mounties came up short, Senior Noah Hutchinson and Junior Jahi Whitney both finished with double figures, scoring 12 and 10, respectively.
This game marked the end to a successful season for the Montclair Mounties, with a team full of talented athletes, some of whom will be back next season with a goal of returning to this stage.
