Congratulations to star junior forward Savannah Seawell on being named Montclair Sports Network’s Athlete of the Year for the Montclair High School Varsity Girls Basketball team!! Savannah just finished her third year of varsity basketball, and she has improved talent and production-wise throughout each of those 3 seasons. Her game has evolved every year of her MHS career as she has drastically improved on her jump shot over the years, and she’s added multiple dribble and post moves to her skillset too.
These improvements in her game over the last few years have shown in her overall production, as she went from averaging just over 6.5 points per game (PPG) and 7.5 rebounds per game (RPG) her freshman year to averaging 15.3 PPG her sophomore year and almost 15 RPG, to then 18 PPG and 12.7 RPG this past season. She has also more than doubled her steals per game (SPG) and blocks per game (BPG) averages since her freshman year as she averaged 2.3 and 2.1 BPG and SPG respectively in her sophomore season, and 1.6 and 1.7 BPG and SPG respectively in her junior year. Additionally, she finished 4th in PPG in a loaded Super Essex Conference, recorded 3.5 stocks (steals + blocks) per game, and had a career-high 29 points in a double overtime 45-42 loss to Livingston.
The offense runs through her as she is fed the ball on just about every possession, leading to her scoring almost half of the team’s points this season. She was extremely dominant on the glass as she grabbed 35% of the team’s total rebounds. Finally, she also anchored an MHS defense that allowed only 31 PPG to public school opponents this year. Her quick hands allowed her to notch the aforementioned 1.7 SPG and her physical dominance allowed her to get 1.6 BPG. Savannah led a youthful 14-11 Mounties team that will certainly improve on their already impressive record next year. She hopes to take the team on a deep run in the county and state tournaments next year and add to her already impressive résumé.
