Last year, The Montclair High School Boys Crew team saw great success at the Garden State Scholastic Championships as they saw one varsity boat take first place, one JV boat take first place, one varsity boat take second place, one freshman boat take second place, and one novice boat take second place. Despite losing major contributors in seniors Zach Troeller, Salif Traore, Alex Stamas, Zeke Synder, Zaire Williams, Juan and Nacho Reig, and Logan Bateman, the team has plenty of excellent returning and incoming rowers which means the team won’t skip a beat.
This year, the Boy's Crew team is looking to add another successful season to their portfolio. Over the past 20 years, Montclair has had 62 boats win State Championship Titles. Last year, Montclair had a lot of success and a strong showing at the Garden State Scholastic Rowing Championship in Camden, the largest scholastic athletic event in the state, as they won the Men’s points trophies. This event helped them to qualify for the Scholastic Rowing Association of America Championships in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where they captured National titles in three events. Competing against 140 of the top crew programs in the country, the Boys Senior Varsity Fours, and Boys JV Fours both won their events, while the Boys Varsity Lightweight Fours placed second. Additionally, every Montclair boat advanced to the finals or semifinals.
This season, Montclair has a strong varsity boat with multiple D1 commits, including Cal Berkeley commit Xav Gagnon, University of Washington commit Colin Pharis, University of Pennsylvania commit Jacob Kugelmass, as well other college commits, and skillful rowers that should lead Montclair to another successful season despite their difficult schedule. With a formidable crew of talented rowers, Montclair is sure to leave its mark on the New Jersey rowing competition and take home multiple State and even National Titles.
