Match Recap: Montclair Mountie Spikers Boys Volleyball against Belleville Buccaneers

The Mountie Spikers defeated the Belleville Buccaneers in their season opener by a score of 2 sets to 1. (17-25, 25-20, 25-19) Jr. OH, Ben Welsh finished with 10 kills, 2 digs. Sr. OH, Sam Korenbaum had 8 kills and 7 digs and 3 aces. Middle Blocker Nnamdi Emehelu had 6 kills and 1 block and Middle Blocker Patrick Reesch had 6 blocks. Setters Chris Borden and Brendan Gibbons had 14 and 13 assists respectively. The Mounties were plagued by unforced errors in the first set. Montclair took its only lead 1-0 and were chasing the Bucs for the remainder of the set. The Bucs piled up 4 service points from their second serving opportunity and took a 9-3 lead. Montclair was only able to score on a side-out and turned the ball back over to Belleville. The lead grew to 12-4 before the Mounties went on a 4-point scoring run. Montclair was able to pull within three points but could never get closer, losing the first set 25-17.

The Mounties stepped on to the court with a determined attitude and after siding out Belleville to tie the set at 1-1, the Mounties never trailed. 5th rotation server Ben Welsh's 3 consecutive service points gave the team an 11-4 lead. Pesky Belleville pulled back to within 5 points before the 2nd rotation server, Senior Outside Hitter Sam Korenbaum chipped in two aces to widen the gap to 16-8. The Bucs closed to 23-20 before a determined Mountie squad took the side out and held serve for the win. Junior Middle Blocker Patrick Reesch began to impose his will at the net with two blocks and several deflections. The backcourt defense picked up 8 digs. Sophomore Libero Sasha Hube had 4 of those. Korenbaum, Welsh and Middle Nnamdi Emehelu had three kills each.

The third and deciding set was a side out affair with neither team scoring more than two points until Senior setter Chris Borden served points 8, 9, and 10 giving Montclair a 10-6 lead. Belleville took possession after two side outs and knotted the score at 11. Montclair regained the serve and moved in front 14-11. Belleville was unable to score service points on their next three side outs, while Montclair scored at least two with each change of possession. With the score at 19-14 Patrick Reesch entered the set and amped up his net patrol. He had three solo blocks in a row to score points 20, 21 and 22. Reesch had 4 blocks in the third set and 6 for the match. 2 attack errors and 1 service error allowed Belleville to move to19-24. After a Montclair timeout, Belleville's serve sailed past the endline for the winning point for the Mounties.
