The Montclair Mounties beat the rival Columbia Cougars, 16-3, on Monday, April 15, to win the Gibbs Cup. The Mounties second win in a row brings them to 3-3, and the loss for Columbia drops their record to 2-4.
The Mounties were led by sophomore attackman Dylan Fowler, who had two goals and a season-high four assists. Senior midfielder Simon Miklazewski scored three goals, senior attackman Evan Schmitt had two goals and two assists, and senior midfielder Manny Robinson scored three times. Columbia had goals from sophomore attackman Gabe O’Brien, junior midfielder Max Bank Walker, and junior midfielder Jared Van Allen.
In the first quarter, Montclair took advantage of Columbia’s slow start and came out to an early 5-0 lead, then continued their dominance in the second quarter, putting up four goals to Columbia’s two. In the third, Montclair had another 5-0 run, while in the fourth outscoring Columbia two to one.
Next, the Mounties take on Fitch-Pitt division rival Chatham, who are formidable opponents, but if the Mounties are going to beat them any year, this is it with such a large, talented senior class. This week, the Cougars also take on a division rival in Livingston.
