The 2024 season for Montclair High School’s football team was a rollercoaster of emotions, ending with a final record of 4-6. While the Mounties faced some early setbacks, they showed resilience and determination as the season progressed. Their most dominant performances came against Bloomfield, where they secured a decisive 48-14 victory, and Barringer, in a 46-6 blowout. These wins highlighted the team’s potential and gave fans a glimpse of the Mounties’ strong capabilities on both sides of the ball.
Guided by head coach Jermain Johnson, the team competed in the highly challenging Super Football Conference, Freedom Red division, which features some of the top programs in New Jersey. Despite their best efforts, the Mounties found themselves in the middle of a rebuilding phase, with younger players gaining valuable experience to carry forward in future seasons.
The climax of their year came during the state playoffs, where they faced a familiar foe, East Orange. Earlier in the season, Montclair had edged out East Orange in a thrilling 19-12 regular-season matchup, demonstrating their ability to rise to the occasion in high-pressure situations. However, the rematch in the playoffs did not go as planned. East Orange adjusted their game plan and handed Montclair a tough 28-14 loss, ending the Mounties’ hopes for a deeper run in the state tournament. This defeat was a sobering moment for a team that had shown flashes of brilliance throughout the year.
Montclair’s storied football tradition remains a source of pride, with 31 playoff appearances and 8 sectional titles over the years. While the 2024 season didn’t add another championship to their legacy, it served as a building block for future success. The team’s effort, coupled with their determination to compete in one of the most competitive conferences in the state, lays a solid foundation for growth. Fans and players alike remain optimistic as the Mounties look to return stronger in 2025.
